The Grandmaster is a 2013 film directed by Wong Kar-Wai. The film is loosely based on the life story of Ip Man, the Wing Chun grandmaster, and set between the 1930s and 1970s. With the majority of his filmography done in Hong Kong, Wong Kar-Wai intended this film to be a major collaboration with mainland China's film industry, noting that the enormous expansion and growth in China's film industry and market over the past decade has provided filmmakers with resources to make features that weren't possible before. The Grandmaster was the opening film at the 63rd Berlin International Film Festival and was nominated for Best Cinematography and Best Costume Design at the 86th Academy Awards.
