Film: A Better Life
Set largely in East Los Angeles, "A Better Life" involves a struggle to hold onto a home of one's own. For Luis and his own father, a gardener, Carlos (Demian Bichir), that means the United States, though home is also the relationship between father and son. A single father, Carlos worries about his son but is so wrung out by dawn-to-dusk labors, rising with bird songs and jackhammers, he barely seems to know him. When offered a chance to buy a truck, he sees it as a path to the promised life of the title. This story reflects the experiences young people like Luis and his immigrant parents go through every day. It is something known all too well to many of our Anderson colleagues.

Film: Crazy Rich Asians
Crazy Rich Asians has revolutionized Asian representation in Hollywood and carries many themes we can all relate to, in re: to differences between being Chinese vs. Chinese-American. In the film, Rachel Chu is happy to accompany her longtime boyfriend, Nick, to his best friend's wedding in Singapore. She's surprised to learn that Nick's family is extremely wealthy and he's considered one of the country's most eligible bachelors. Thrust into the spotlight, Rachel must now contend with jealous socialites, quirky relatives and something far, far worse -- Nick's disapproving mother.

The film is directed by one of the most well-known Chinese directors Wong Kar-wai. It is frequently listed as one of the greatest films of the 2000s and one of the major works of Asian cinema, and in 2016 was voted as the second best film of the 21st century by 177 film critics from around the world.

Film: Along with the Gods: The Two Worlds
Along with the Gods is based on a steady-seller cartoon of the same name in Korea. Per the Korean mythology, a person who has died must be brought to 7 trials to be judged his/her sins regarding 7 categories: filial piety, murder, indolence, untruth, injustice, betrayal, and violence. Despite criticism on the completeness of the movie, it is a good chance to observe hereafter in the Korean mythology.

Film: The Missing Picture (Cambodia)
"The Missing Picture (2013) is a Cambodian-French documentary film that uses news, documentary footage, and clay figurines to discuss the Khmer Rouge's rule from 1975-79 in Cambodia. A nominee for the 86th Academy Awards for Best Foreign Film, the film is especially relevant now in light of the International Tribunal's ruling in November 2018 that characterized the Khmer Rouge's actions, leading to the deaths of a fifth of the population, as a genocide

Film: Chak De
Chak De! India (English: Go! India) is a 2007 Indian sports film, directed by Shimit Aminand. It tells a fictional story about the Indian women's national field-hockey team, which was inspired by the team's win at the 2002 Commonwealth Games, and explores themes such as feminism and sexism, the legacy of the partition of India, racial and religious bigotry, and ethnic and regional prejudice. Chak De! India won a number of awards, including the National Film Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment.

For a movie set in what we now view as a sprawling metropolis, Chinatown can feel surprisingly small, even as the film has been elevated as one of the great American films of the 20th century. It is an ode to Los Angeles' humbler beginnings as a town in the middle of the desert, buoyed more by the promise of what could be rather than the reality of what was. Such speculation drives the story of Chinatown forward, from a private eye investigating an alleged affair to his discovery of a greater conspiracy.

The panel following Chinatown will discuss the film itself, the portrayal of LA, and the Time's Up movement, as we evaluate what implications the director's rape conviction has on how the work of art is now viewed in the film community.

Each identity club at Anderson will select a movie that represents their region and culture. We will screen those movies, serve local food and host a Q&A sessions with various members of those identity clubs.

The festival is an opportunity for students to share and discuss their diverse backgrounds with the Anderson community. This event is not limited to international students, as we want to engage the entire Anderson community.
